To be - or not to be - in equities?
Article Abstract:
Successive annual gilts/equity studies from BZW seem to indicate that the risk of investing in the stock market is more than compensated by the long-term gains. However, it is important to be aware of a number of secondary factors when considering investing in equities. Taking standard deviation as a measure of risk, as the BZW studies do, fails to accurately reflect the meaning of risk for most investors, and it is also possible to have some reservations about BZW's assessment of the overall level of the stock market.

Solving the equity premium puzzle
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable debate about why the equity premium, as measured by the returns actually produced by the financial markets, does not remain stable. There has actually been a sharp rise since the second world war in the difference between the real returns produced by the stock market and those produced by government bonds. Academics have given particular attention since the mid-1980s to why there has been a significant change in the risk that investors perceive in the stock market.
