The beat goes on - but not for long
Article Abstract:
The UK's police service is currently undergoing one of the most extensive reorganisations which it has experienced for several generations. The Home Office is soon to publish the results of its Review of Police Core and Ancillary Tasks, the main aim of which is to identify police activities which could be undertaken by local authorities or private concerns. An number of police duties are expected to move to private control, including accompanying heavy loads along main roads, transcribing taped interviews and reporting missing persons.

Howard fails to meet police forces' demands
Article Abstract:
Chief Constables have expressed strong opposition to home secretary Michael Howard's new police funding plans. They believe that the new system would force police forces to reduce staff levels, halt recruitment and make extensive cuts in resources. The home secretary may now have to rethink the idea of replacing the existing system of funding police forces according to their size with new assessment measures based on factors such as workload, population and crime rates.
