The bullethole that may reignite Ulster's war
Article Abstract:
It appears that the loyalist ceasefire in Northern Ireland is now coming to an end, despite pressure on the UVF and the UDA, the main loyalist paramilitary groups, from the Progressive Unionists and the Ulster Democratic Party, their political wings. The loyalists stuck to the ceasefire for a considerable time because it gave them additional political power and because they hoped that the IRA would return to the ceasefire. However, their patience has come to an end following a growing number of IRA attacks.

How Blair cleared the clouds of mistrust
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has taken a pragmatic approach to dealing with possible barriers to negotiating a peace settlement in Northern Ireland. He has shown willingness to take into account the concerns of republicans, and has established an ambitious timetable for talks. He has not acceded to Unionists demands that de-commissioning of weapons be a pre-condition for participation in peace talks, and has stated that de-commissioning will be undertaken in parallel with negotiations.

The scars of war slow path to reconciliation
Article Abstract:
The ceasefire in Northern Ireland has now been in operation for a year, but tensions still remain and it will take a long time for full reconciliation to be achieved. Punishment beatings and intimidation still take place, and there is now much less confidence in the peace process. However, most people now believe that there will not be a return to full scale violence.
