Tahiti in shock after 12 hours ablaze
Article Abstract:
The decision by France to detonate a test nuclear weapon at Mururoa atoll in French Polynesia has sparked off violent riots in Tahiti, which has been a French colony since 1842. Many young Polynesians are now calling for an end to French rule, and have attacked French government buildings. France has had to send more troops to Tahiti, and it now looks likely that the violence could extend to other parts of the South Pacific.

Not in our back yard, Jacques ...
Article Abstract:
There have been strong anti-French protests in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific island nations since France announced that it is to resume testing nuclear weapons at Mururoa Atoll. Large-scale demonstrations have been held, and business seen to be connected in any way with France have been badly affected. However, some people see the response as hypocritical, as Australia still sells uranium to France.

Bombing Tahiti out of submission
Article Abstract:
The recent controversy about French plans for nuclear weapons testing on Mururoa atoll, 600 miles south of Tahiti, has led to an upsurge in anti-French feeling in French Polynesia. Protesters have also been able to attract a considerable amount of international support. To many Polynesians, the nuclear testing ground is a symbol of French colonial power, and they no longer wish to be so dependent on France.
