The burger that ate the world
Article Abstract:
Fast food restaurant chain McDonald's will open its 25,000th outlet some time later in 1999. The company has established a presence in 115 countries, but in fact serves less than 1% of the world's population on any one day. Sales have slowed down in the US, so McDonald's is now focusing on the rest of the world. It will open 1,750 outlets in 1999, of which most will be outside the US. The McDonald's experience is bland, but also has the advantage of being predictable and unthreatening.

At least he died with his boots on
Article Abstract:
The famous Marlboro Man billboard on Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, CA, is now being used for anti-tobacco advertising. This follows the Master Settlement between the leading tobacco companies and the US government, part of which obliges the tobacco companies to hand over to the State health and education departments all the billboards on which they have leases. This billboard uses the familiar Marlboro Man image, but adapts it to emphasize the negative aspects of smoking.
