Singer-songwriter, cartoonist and writer Shel Silverstein developed a career as a cartoonist and writer with Playboy after serving in Korea. He also wrote songs, and recorded 'Inside Folk Music' in 1962. His first children's book, 'Uncle Shelby's Story of Lafcadio, the Lion who Shot Back,' was published in 1963, while 'The Giving Tree' was published in 1964. He met Dr Hook and the Medicine Show whilst working on the 1971 Dustin Hoffman film 'Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying These Terrible Things about Me?'. Dr Hook recorded 60 of his vignettes about American life.

Ella Mae Morse
Article Abstract:
Singer Ella Mae Morse sang in her parents' band from the age of nine. She joined Jimmy Dorsey's band at the age of 14, and made her first record with Freddie Slack's orchestra in May 1942. Her second Capitol Records record was 'Mr Five By Five,' which became a pop and R&B hit. She returned to Capitol in 1951 after the collapse of her second marriage, and worked with conductor and arranger Nelson Riddle on 'Blacksmith Blues.' She retired from recording in 1957, but for 14 consecutive years worked for a few weeks at Disneyland.

Jay Livingston
Article Abstract:
Songwriter Jay Livingston was born in McDonald, PA, in 1915. He studied journalism at the University of Pennsylvania, and during this time formed a dance band. He worked with Ray Evans, who wrote the lyrics. Their first really successful song was 'G'bye Now.'
