The chicken and tomato problem
Article Abstract:
The current controversy over genetically engineered foodstuffs such as soya highlights the extent to which large food manufacturers have lost sight of the fact that their main aim should be to provide products which people need to survive. Indeed, some manufacturers seem to regard ordinary people as standing in the way of their efforts to make profits through selling biological products to growers. It is vital that consumers are able to make informed choices about whether to consume genetically modified foodstuffs.

Tobacco firm funds British nicotine study
Article Abstract:
The revelation that British American Tobacco (BAT) awarded a two-year grant of 100,000 pounds sterling to scientist Susan Wonnacott of Bath University for research into the effects of nicotine on brain cells has attracted considerable controversy. She believes that the funding was vital to the success of the project, which is one of a number in this extremely specialised area. She points out that scientists are in a very difficult position, as there is so little funding available.

Stolen uranium: the really hot stuff
Article Abstract:
It is becoming clear that uranium stockpiles in the former Soviet Union could be attracting attention from criminals who wish to sell uranium at a large profit. Hungarian police arrested two men in Aug 1994 for trying to sell uranium in a car park, and Romanian police have recently arrested four men who had access to uranium worth around $1.5 million. There is particular concern that uranium stolen from sites in the former Soviet Union may find its way to Iraq.
