The comfort of a frumpy chair
Article Abstract:
The University Women's Club, Mayfair, London, England has 1500 members who are graduates or have distinguished careers. The club was established in 1883 to offer facilities for meetings of minds to discuss social and academic issues. Its members are not feminists; men are always invited to functions. There is an elegant restaurant, bar and library. Young women who work for financial independence need mentors and would appreciate advice from older women.

'They told me I'd never be cured.' (using castration to prevent sex offenders from reoffending) (Interview)
Article Abstract:
Only one sex offender in the UK has so far volunteered to be surgically castrated, and the issue is still the subject of considerable controversy. The offender in question believe that being castrated was the only way to prevent him reoffending, but surgeons have mixed views, fearing ethical problems and possible side-effects. In most cases, sex offenders are offered hormone treatment, but this has a very low success rate.

Single black attitude
Article Abstract:
More than six out of 10 black women aged 20-39 are single, a considerably higher rate than for white women, according to the 1991 Census. Many believe that there are few decent black men around and that they are better off by themselves. The issue is now being widely discussed in the black press, and some articles are critical of black woment too, accusing them of being to blame for their own problems.
