Visitors wishing to follow La Ruta Maya in order to explore Mayan sites in Guatemala, Belize and southern Mexico usually begin in the coastal plains of the Yucatan Peninsula and the Cayes, or islands, off Belize. They then travel through the jungles of Belize and eastern Guatemala, reaching southern Mexico via the highlands of western Guatemala. It is best to travel to this region between Nov and Apr, when it is drier than during spring and autumn and the summer heat has dropped. The strength of the pound means that it is not expensive to travel in this region.
