Churchill protected Scottish peer suspected of spying for Japan
Article Abstract:
Lord Sempill, a Scottish Lord and British Admiralty navy commander, was suspected of being a spy for Japan in the 1939-1945 war, prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, argued that Sempill should be moved rather than prosecuted. Sempill developed contacts with Japan from 1921, and his phone was later tapped and it was found thatthe contacts had been maintained. There was no clear evidence that Sempill actually was a spy.
