The end of our decline? We shall see
Article Abstract:
The recent 'Britain in the World' conference was founded on the conviction of foreign secretary Douglas Hurd that the UK's international esteem is starting to revive again. All speakers seemed to support the view that the UK should feel optimistic about its international future, but some observers question whether the many years of decline in the UK's international standing really have come to an end. They do not believe that the UK can really enjoy a revival while it still has a weak and ineffective government.

Under the Dome: a serious proposal
Article Abstract:
The planned Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, England, should not merely be a place of entertainment. It should take on a serious role, posing and attempting to answer questions about humanity. It should encourage visitors to think deeply, particularly about sustainability in the 21st century and about how to deal with urgent environmental issues. This Dome project will only be really successful if it is able to capture the imagination of very large numbers of people.

The deal with Mr Adams
Article Abstract:
It is vital that the UK government treats Sinn Fein both as the representative of the IRA and a developing constitutional party if the Northern Irish peace process is to succeed. Sinn Fein must not be forced to decide whether it is a front for the IRA or a democratic political party, as this would effectively separate the IRA from the peace process. It is now vital to accept that Sinn Fein is not a normal party, and negotiations must proceed on this basis.
