Reform and regeneration in the new Russia
Article Abstract:
Planning in Russia has been affected by rapid change and the need to link private and public sector developments. Military interests tended to weigh strongly in planning in the Soviet Union, and there have been a number of problematic legacies from the past. These are illustrated by the town of Tula south of Moscow, where industrial production was geared to military uses and the water supply has been polluted. There is also contamination from the Chernobyl disaster leading to a high number of birth defects.

The eye did not see, the world did not grieve
Article Abstract:
Louis Braille was sent to the Royal Institute for Blind Children in Paris in 1819 when he was ten. Conditions were poor and little reading was taught, using relief print. Louis realised that the meaning of letters was comprehended by the brain rather than by the eyes, so he devised an alphabet for fingers: a six-dot code arranged in three pairs like dominoes. He became a teacher in his own school but the authorities had no faith in his system. Braille died from tuberculosis in 1852 aged 43.

Morality bites: 'Everyman,' great characters, but where's the love interest?
Article Abstract:
A satire of how an author might use the 500-year-old morality play "Everyman" shows how the work could be updated. The religious content of the play with its allegorical characters of God, Fellowship, Good Deeds and Death could be revised and replaced. Everyman becomes Everyperson. The Middle English language becomes rap, with music. Everyman's concerns about dying and redemption may be acted out as a missionary in someplace like Rwanda.
