The folly of betraying Bosnia
Article Abstract:
After two years of carnage in the former Yugoslavia, the West is considering that the Bosnian government should concede defeat in 1993. This abandonment would not signify well of the institutions supposed to keep chaos away. It would imply an end to respect for the Charter of the United Nations, the 1990 Paris Charter of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Eruope and the Geneva convention. Sarajevo should be saved, but further aggression must be stopped or it is pointless. Ideally Bosnia-Herzegovina should be recreated as a unitary state, but it is probably too late.

Pax Americana: Bosnia is its first success
Article Abstract:
The peace agreement which has recently been signed by the participants in the conflict in Bosnia will probably not resolve ethnic tensions in the region, but will at least be better than a war which has killed hundreds of thousands of people. It is certainly a great achievement for the US government, which managed to persuade the Balkan negotiators to remain in the US, far away from the conflict, for a considerable time until agreement was finally reached. The agreement also highlights the complete failure of European countries to take effective action.

The show that Europe missed
Article Abstract:
There were points during the Bosnian conflict at which European countries could have taken effective action to bring the fighting to an end, but they failed to do so. In the end, it was the US which took the decisive steps, and has now managed to persuade all parties to sign a peace treaty. This highlights the extent to which European countries are still reliant upon US power, having not taken up the opportunity to show that they can operate effectively alone.
