The glossy world of contract publishing

The contract magazine sector is expanding rapidly in the UK, and 15 of the leading 20 consumer magazine titles are now contract magazines, according to the Association of Publishing Agencies. Redwood Publishing, the largest contract publisher, produces 110 million magazines a year, including the leading titles, AA Magazine and Sky TV Guide. Contract magazines are now recognized as offering advertisers are very strictly targeted readership. Editorial standards are high, and readers are often quite wealthy.

The media career that means business

There are now more than 5,000 business or specialist magazines being published in the UK, and more than a quarter of adults have read at least one specialist magazine in the past year. The specialist magazine sector accounts for twice as much advertising revenue as consumer magazines. However, graduates often do not consider this sector as offering career opportunities. In fact, graduates who work for a specialist magazine can build up a very high profile quite rapidly.

Fall of the house of Wagadon
Article Abstract:
There have been significant changes at publishing house Wagadon since mid-1997. It has doubled its publishing output with the launch of Deluxe and Frank, but has experienced problems with both these titles. It has also proved difficult to implement editorial changes at The Face, its flagship magazine. However, it is becoming clear that Wagadon has the potential to be a strong competitor to well-established magazine publishing houses.
