The higher route to a new vocation
Article Abstract:
Higher education institutions in the UK offer an extremely wide range of postgraduate courses. Some are aimed at graduates who wish to pursue research and development work, while others are designed to allow graduates to gain entry to particular professions, such as teaching or social work. It is unwise to choose a course which focuses on a very specific area of research unless you are very sure that this is the path you wish to follow. It is also important to be aware that many science and technology postgraduate courses can be undertaken part-time.

A question of horses for courses
Article Abstract:
Graduates who decide to undertake some kind of postgraduate study should not do so simply in order to avoid having to make difficult decisions about their future career. Those who feel really committed to postgraduate study must choose between a course based on instruction and a course based on research. Taught courses generally last for a year, leading to a Masters degree or postgraduate diploma. Doctorates take at least three years, and are based on original research.

The degree's in the post
Article Abstract:
A postgraduate qualification can be extremely useful for gaining entry to certain professions. However, it is important not to use a postgraduate course simply as a way of delaying making a career decision. It is also worth considering gaining relevant work experience too. Some postgraduate courses aimed at specific occupations may not be of much vocational value to a newly qualified graduate, and it is therefore wise to seek expert advice before deciding on a course.
