The honourable trade of trying to make sense of the world
Article Abstract:
The views of a television journalist beginning an assignment as a special correspondent for the BBC's 'Nine O'Clock News' are presented. Consideration is given to the pressures which are now placed on special correspondents and to the need to ensure that special correspondents do not have to work to deadlines which are so tight that quality is compromised. The expectations that ordinary viewers have of special correspondents are considered, and the strengths of the BBC's news-gathering operation are discussed.

Article Abstract:
Cookery programmes have become a key element of television scheduling in the UK. The first celebrity television cook was Fanny Cradock, who appeared on many programmes on both ITV and BBC for many years. Today, the most popular television cooks are Delia Smith, Gary Rhodes, Madhur Jaffrey and Ken Hom, among others. Broadcasters favour cookery programmes because they are very inexpensive to produce and offer considerable potential for related merchandising.
