Keep it in the family
Article Abstract:
The Family Group Conference approach to dealing with problem children aims to move the main responsibility for taking key decisions regarding these children away from professionals such as social workers and towards the child's family. This method, which is now being tested by 25 local authorities in the UK, was pioneered in New Zealand and Australia. Family conferences can initially be extremely tense, but if handled properly they can allow family members to focus on a common bond.

Pester power boost junk-food boom
Article Abstract:
Many British parents are concerned about what their children eat, but find themselves giving in to demands from their children for unhealthy foods, according to a survey by Mintel. Children are becoming extremely influenced by advertising, and are also under peer pressure regarding eating habits. For these reasons, parents find it increasingly difficult to ensure that their children eat healthily. Many children refuse to eat fresh vegetables, and many eat too many sweets.

Labour's loose volcano
Article Abstract:
UK Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short has attracted considerable media attention because of her refusal to stick to the official Labour party line on many issues. She is outspokenly critical of those who view her negatively, and seems driven to say what she thinks, regardless of the consequences. Her outspokenness is currently being tolerated by top Labour party officials, but it is uncertain whether her career will progress much further.
