The men who took the heart out of social work
Article Abstract:
Social workers in the UK have for many years been willing to face extremely difficult situations, often working very long hours and dealing with traumatic cases. Until recently, they did so in the knowledge that they could rely on the support of their managers and that social work's value systems were founded on professionalism and humanity. However, this is no longer the case. In particular, social work has been negatively affected by MBA managers who focus on administration and fail to value their staff.

Parents of heart-op boy 'not told of risk.' (legal action against Hillingdon Health Authority for boy who suffered brain damage)
Article Abstract:
Hillingdon Health Authority is being sued for damages by Kevin and Linda Poynter on behalf on their son Matthew, who underwent a heart operation at Harefield hospital in Dec 1987 at the age of 16 months. He suffered extensive brain damage during the operation, and is significantly disabled. His parents claim that they were put under a great deal of pressure by hospital staff to agree to the operation, even though they had reservations, and that they were not warned about the possible dangers.

Heart of the antimatter
Article Abstract:
Antimatter, which is made up of particles which have many properties which are the opposite of those found in ordinary matter, is present in only very small quantities in the universe. Scientists have found this hard to explain, since it is assumed that the Big Bang which formed the universe created matter and antimatter in equal quantities. Research using the Stanford Linear Accelerator in California aims to establish which this is the case.
