The new House mistress
Article Abstract:
Margaret Douglas, 58, is stepping down from her post as political adviser to John Birt, director-general of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to take up the job of supervisor of parliamentary broadcasting. This appointment is made by the members of the Houses of Lords and Commons and she will replace John Grist, who oversaw the introduction of the televising of parliament. There were 78 applications for the job but Ms Douglas was the outstanding candidate. She was, in 1983, the special adviser to the then-director-general Alasdair Milne and kept the same job with a different title with Michael Checkland in 1987.

Crisis? What crisis? All's well with ITV
Article Abstract:
New franchises for ITV companies in 1992 have led to conflict about takeover rules. Chairman of the Independent Television Commission (ITC) Sir George Russell has not found any moves downmarket or reduced ratings. ITC decisions were based on quality and highest cash bids were rejected under certain circumstances. Sir George believes larger groupings may be formed. The 1990 Broadcasting Act reduced the functions of the ITC. It no longer has responsibility for the programmes. ITC moves to smaller offices in Foley street after 32 years in Knightsbridge.
