The number of classroom assistants employed in UK schools more than doubled during the Labour party's first term in office, and there are plans to employ a further 20,000 by 2005. There is a growing trend towards classroom assistants becoming teachers in their own right.

In Aug 2001 there are 4,600 unfilled vacancies in British state schools in England and Wales. Schools are finding it difficult to recruit teachers in time for the start of the school year in Sep 2001.
