Everyone's whistling Dixie these days
Article Abstract:
The southern states of the US have become more like the rest of the US in certain ways over recent decades, especially in terms of eliminating divisions between black and whites. However, in other ways the rest of the US has become more like the South. There is a clear sense of the southernisation of US culture, reflected, for example, in the fact that Nashville is now the centre of the country's music business. Southerners have a strong influence in professional sports, and southern religion is becoming increasingly popular.

US report reveals: secrets need a short life cycle
Article Abstract:
The US is widely seen as a model of extremely open government, certainly in comparison with the UK, where there is a very strict system of classification for government documents. However, the Commission on Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy in the US has recently published a report calling for even more openness in government. It recommends the creation of a National Declassification Centre, and states that documents should not normally remain secret for more than 10 years.
