The nuclear family is dead. Long live the family
Article Abstract:
Significant changes are taking place in patterns of family life in the UK. There are high levels of satisfaction with family life, but the number of traditional nuclear families is declining. More couples are now choosing not to have children, and divorce has become accepted. Most modern marriages are successful, and few people live alone throughout their whole adult life. Parents face significant challenges, including increased financial commitments while their children are young and problems with making flexible childcare and working arrangements. It is likely that the family will develop towards a long, four-generational stem.

Babar on roller skates with a walkman
Article Abstract:
Classic children's literature used to contain civilising influences. Books such as 'Pinnochio' and 'Heidi' showed children their place in society. 'Pinnochio' was written by an Italian political satirist. The author of Heidi, Joanna Spyri, belonged to a group of liberal-minded Zurich intellectuals. Modern versions of the Babar stories by Jean de Brunhoff lose the moralising purpose. Most new childrens stories are extreme fantasy or intense family stories which have no responsibility to immediate, social world.
