The nursery that took all the children's toys away
Article Abstract:
A growing number of nurseries in Germany are participating in 'Der Spielzeugfreie Kindergarten,' a project which involves them removing toys for three months of the year. Children are given only tables, chairs and blankets, and are left to use these imaginatively. The founders of this project believe that children can become overwhelmed by toys, hampering their creativity. Teachers have found that children who have no toys are initially uncertain about what to do, but gradually become more confident and become involved in imaginative play. In the long term, they are able to concentrate better and integrate better into groups.

Invest in the early years
Article Abstract:
The Labour party is soon to start investigating how its existing commitment to developing nursery education can be expanded to ensure that an educational environment is established in all services for young children. It hopes that a comprehensive system of this kind will provide children with a strong basis for later educational progress, and plans to build on the good practice and range of services which already exist. In this way, children will no longer have to be cared for in a number of different environments and family life will be improved.
