The player vs the transfer trap
Article Abstract:
Belgian footballer Jean-Marc Bosman has taken a challenge to the transfer system operated by football clubs to the European Court of Justice (ECJ). This court will now consider whether the Treaty of Rome bans football clubs from charging transfer fees when a player's contract expires and whether the national and international football authorities can limit numbers of foreign players in their competitions. A decision in Bosman's favour could lead to competitive market forces eliminating the transfer of players.

Caught in Britain's visa trap
Article Abstract:
Britain requires people seeking asylum to have visas but Bosnians have a dangerous journey to Belgrade to obtain one. This is usually the case in regions of conflict. The British mission is likely to refuse a visa for asylum-seeking, so refugees often have to deceive the authorities. In 1935 Britain had visa restrictions for German nationals, hindering Jews trying to escape. Organisation of help is left to voluntary groups who may be inexperienced. About 5,500 former Yugoslavs sought asylum by Oct 1992.

Benefit trap for the middle class
Article Abstract:
Many unemployed people in the UK will see a reduction in their state benefits as a result of the replacement of unemployment benefit with the job seekers' allowance. This will only be paid for six months automatically, following which claimants will be means tested. Those who have assets and capital of more than 8,000 pounds sterling, not including their home, will not receive the allowance after six months, while those with savings of 3,000-8,000 pounds sterling will receive only part of the allowance.
