Television producers have discovered that there are particular problems involved in televising the weekly National Lottery draw, and are now looking at how these problems are tackled in other countries as they prepare for the revamp of the BBC's National Lottery Live programme in Mar 1995. They must decide how to deal with the inevitable anticlimax at the end of the programme, as it is not possible to show the winner, and how to fill most of the time, as the actual draw is very quick.

The decision by the UK Labour party to return a donation from Formula One Holdings President Bernie Ecclestone raises important questions about the future of private sector funding of political parties in the UK. In particular, a shadow has been cast on donations from businesses that will inevitably be affected by government decisions. It is now seems increasingly appropriate that all political parties should issue an in-depth analysis of the sources of their funding.

Lauda finds a successful airline formula

Lauda Air, owned by Niki Lauda, ex-racing driver in partnership with the Austrian tour operator Itas, has acquired Lufthansa of Germany as a partner. He founded Lauda Air in 1985 with two Fokker P27s and it is expected to make $3 million - 1.56 million pounds sterling - in Oct 1992. It made a loss of $800,000 in 1991 because of a Boeing 767 crash in Thailand which killed 223 people. Lauda sells quality seats at reasonable prices on worldwide scheduled flights.
