The private agonies of a troubled mind
Article Abstract:
When Judith Ward was awaiting trial she was held at the Risley remand centre almost in isolation and twice cut her wrists. This was not reported to her family or her solicitor. She has blanked a lot of memories from her mind in order to survive; some women prisoners deteriorated in prison. Judith, however, achieved an Open University degree in Art and European History and wrote poetry and songs. As a teenager she became restless and sought excitement so she drifted around England and Ireland and often carried republican literature. Several times the police ignored her false confessions and considered her a nuisance but suddenly believed her after the M62 bombing.

Britain is unwilling to help countries which do not respect human rights. Facts and figures are given on ten problems increasing between 1972 and 1992: population, war and refugees, nuclear power, transport, global warming, ozone layer, mega-cities, rainforests, fisheries and species.

Co Durham's Corbusier seeks to heal rift over troubled bridge
Article Abstract:
The Apollo Pavilion in Peterlee, County Durham, England, was designed to act as a focal point for the Sunny Blunts housing estate, according to artist and sculptor Victor Pasmore, who designed the structure when he was consulting director of urban design for Peterlee. The pavilion, which was built in 1963, has been attracting considerable controversy recently. Local people want it demolished, as it attracts vandals and looks unsightly, but English Heritage has recommended to the government that it should be listed Grade II*.
