The public benefits of co-operatives
Article Abstract:
Financial experts in the UK generally recognize that the mutual structure is ideal for certain public services. This may be regarded as surprising, given that mutuality has come under strong pressure in the financial sector. In public services, people welcome the opportunity to have a say in a company's governance structure, as they are usually not in a position to switch allegiance to another service provider. This is particularly the case with companies which have a large commercial exposure to the service in question.

EMU - the key to the crucial German question
Article Abstract:
It is becoming widely recognised that German membership is vital if EMU is to succeed. If Germany is not attracted, then it would rapidly become a key focal point for a large group of countries with which it already has close links. Germany's main concern is drifting away from the countries which have traditionally made up the core of Europe. It is insisting on the creation of strong European political institutions, regarding these as vital to the success of a single currency and a single central bank.
