The raw and the cooked
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian island of Lombok is very different from Bali, the neighbouring island. Most of Lombok's residents are Sasaks, and their culture gives the island a unique atmosphere. Lombok attracts relatively few tourists, and traditional rituals remain mainly private, rather than being tourist spectacles. Most local people are still involved in the day-to-day work of subsistence farming and fishing. Visitors who come to Lombok tend to focus on the Gili islands off the north west coast.
