The strange story of the ambassador's missing letter
Article Abstract:
The case of an employee of a British company working in what was probably a Middle Eastern country who complained about the treatment he had received from the British ambassador to that country and was subsequently dismissed highlights the fact that the British State never feels the need to issue explanations or to make apologies. It believes that its ambassadors and other representatives at high level should be allowed to exercise their power without hindrance. This view is rarely challenged by government ministers, but in this case the man concerned did eventually receive an apology and financial compensation.

How willing are Milosevic's executioners in Kosovo?
Article Abstract:
The psychic state of the Serbian population in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, should be a key element in planning a peace settlement in the region. It will be important to assess whether the ethnic Albanians living in Kosovo have been demonized in the eyes of the Serbs, thus bringing the risk of ethnic cleansing continuing even as Yugoslavia President Slobodan Milosevic seeks to negotiate a settlement. Public opinion in western countries is strongly behind the ethnic Albanians fleeing Kosovo, who seem to have been treated much as the Jews were treated by the Nazis during the second world war.

We surely need something better to bind us together on these islands
Article Abstract:
UK Home Secretary David Blunkett has raised interesting questions regarding national identity. Citizenship is an element of national identity, but there are currently no values attached to citizenship. The next stage should be to have a basic statement of the rights and duties of British citizens.
