The opera's the thing
Article Abstract:
It is almost impossible to put on a production of a Shakespeare work in exactly the same way as the playwright intended, according to theatre director Matthew Warchus. However, he is to direct a production of 'Hamlet' for the RSC in spring 1997. This provides an interesting contrast to his production of Verdi's opera 'Falstaff' for Opera North, which is to open shortly. He believes that opera has the potential to offer a more authentic Shakespearean experience than ordinary theatre.

New order
Article Abstract:
Taking chances can bring considerable benefits in the theatre, according to Dominic Dromgoole, director of the Bush theatre in London, England. This theatre has a long tradition of encouraging new writing, and Dromgoole has continued this by commissioning a number of new works. He feels that new writing has now become more central to the theatre. He has recently been appointed by Sir Peter Hall to provide new plays for the Old Vic company.
