The truth about Potter
Article Abstract:
Playwright Dennis Potter claimed to hate biographies because they presented lies as facts and acted as hidden novels, but Potter's own publisher, Faber, is publishing a highly critical biography of Potter by Humphrey Carpenter. Extracts of the biography are also being serialised in The Sunday Times, even though Potter disapproved of the standards of Rupert Murdoch's newspapers. Faber claims Potter constantly talked and wrote about his life and that he accepted a biography would be published. However, biographers are encouraged to distort the facts to maximize sales.
