There can be no hiding places for corrupt police
Article Abstract:
The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has been extremely reluctant to take disciplinary action against police officers, even in cases where people have died during arrest or in custody. This body will only go ahead with a prosecution if there is a realistic prospect of conviction and if the hearing of the case would be in the public interest. It can be hard to obtain the evidence against police officers who have transgressed which would be necessary for there to be a realistic chance of conviction, and it can also be argued that prosecuting police officers is not in the public interest.

Shifting political loyalty is good news for the press
Article Abstract:
UK newspapers have traditionally leaned towards the Conservative party, as they have associated the Labour party with the trade unions, which have been very powerful in newspaper publishing. Indeed, some newspapers simply became an extension of election campaigns, rather than impartial observers. However, it now seems that Conservative domination of the national press has been broken, particularly with the declaration by the Sun newspaper that it will now support Labour. Moving away from close party allegiances will make newspapers more powerful.

Conning the media
Article Abstract:
The recent 1996 convention of the US Republican party shows the extent to which politicians can now manipulate the media to gain public support. All speeches were carefully stage-managed, and journalists were pushed to one side. The Conservative and Labour parties in the UK have the understanding of the techniques required to act in this way, and already tightly control their annual conferences. However, they have much lower advertising expenditure than their US counterparts, and are unlikely to gain the top spot on television news programmes.
