There is a sex offender near you

Article Abstract:

It is likely that there are paedophiles living in many communities in the UK. Many do not feel that they are doing anything that is really wrong, and do not intend to change their behaviour. The government believes that it can address this problem by setting up a register of offenders which would be held by the police. Simply informing local communities if a paedophile moves into the area does not go far enough, as it would merely serve to greatly restrict the freedom of children. The only real solution is to ensure that paedophiles are not released into the community.

Who will be the master of the science genie?

Article Abstract:

Politicians tend to try to avoid assuming responsibility for scientific advances when these developments touch sensitive areas. They make the mistake of passing these issues on to philosophers or lawyers, while responsibility for public policy is left with scientists. Scientific discovery is now advancing at a very rapid pace, and society has little choice but to simply consume its products. There is no mechanism within democratic systems which allows people to make real choices about the best ways to use the products of scientific discovery.

Debt relief for the Third World is not enough

Article Abstract:

It is possible to question whether cancelling Third World debt is sufficient to overcome poverty in a world where the economies of individual countries can no longer be controlled from within national boundaries. Reliving debt will not in itself ensure that viable businesses are set up in developing countries or that starving children are fed. To really overcome poverty, it may be necessary to involve global capital, although care should be taken to ensure that no developing country is dominated by a single company.
