There is an alternative to joining the euro
Article Abstract:
It is worth giving serious consideration to the suggestion by Newt Gingrich, speaker of the US House of Representatives, that the UK should join the North American Free Trade Association (Nafta) instead of European economic and monetary union. Some people would feel that it would be strange for the UK to sever links with the European Union and move closer to North America, but it would be wrong to be tied to physical proximity. Furthermore, the UK would derive considerable benefits from the fact that the region covered by the Nafta will be a faster-growing region than Europe over the next 50 years.

The drawbacks of a one-size-fits-all monetary policy become clearer
Article Abstract:
The apparent split within the UK government about membership of European economic and monetary union (Emu) has raised a number of important political and economic issues. It has drawn attention to the economic cycle, and in particular to the possibility of inappropriate monetary policy being imposed on the UK. When the UK government finally makes a decision about Emu membership, it will be necessary to debate whether the interest rates of the euro are appropriate. It is already clear that a single monetary policy puts pressure on weaker regions.

Economic sense and political sensibilities over the euro
Article Abstract:
It is just possible that the 155 German economists who are calling for the start of European economic and monetary union (EMU) to be postponed because the leading European countries are not yet in a sufficiently stable economic condition will be successful. It is now becoming clear that Germany will determine whether EMU will go ahead, and when. There is a strong economic argument in favour of delaying EMU, but for a time political will can overrule economic forces.
