They're after Uncle Sam's poor Auntie
Article Abstract:
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which provides programmes for over 700 American television and radio stations, requests increased federal funding in Jun 1992 but the President, Vice-President, Senator Robert Dole and columnist George Will are in coalition to refuse. CPB is hoping for $1.1 billion, 611 million pounds sterling, for 1994-1996. In 1990 only 15% of income came from the federal budget, 53% from private sources including corporate donations. 'The Civil War', an 11-hour documentary, was financed partly by General Motors and was very popular. Other broadcasting stations could not have risked the five and a half years it took to make.

The secretive ruler who turned his country into a family business
Article Abstract:
President Suharto of Indonesia has been able to make himself extremely powerful through using silence and secrecy and playing his rivals off against each other. His own family has become very wealthy through extensive business interests. He has overseen a significant improvement in Indonesia's economy, and has given the country a middle class. However, this middle class is now demanding a say in how the country is run, and Suharto's future seems increasingly uncertain. He will only remain in power if he can retain the support of the army.

Want a 17% tax rate?
Article Abstract:
Republican presidential candidate contender Steve Forbes has made a 17% flat tax the basis of his battle for the presidency. He believes that this approach will reduce the tax bills of most ordinary people, cut the scope of the IRS and eliminate groups which currently lobby government for tax concessions. The tax system in the UK is currently much closer to this approach than that of the US. A flat tax brings a number of advantages, including taking the same share of people's income at all levels.
