Recent strong criticism by novelist Alice Thomas Ellis, a former postulant nun, of former Archbishop of Liverpool, England, Derek Warlock has served to highlight serious splits in the English Catholic church between liberals and traditionalists. He was certainly far removed from the traditional stronghold of Catholicism, and had no clear links with working class Liverpool Irish Catholicism. In one way, the English Catholic church made considerable progress under his influence, but in another way he also had a very negative impact.

The growing sophistication of genetic engineering is causing some observers to raise questions about the links between genetics and human rights. In particular, concerns are being raised about the ability of geneticists to completely determine a person's make-up. It may eventually be possible to discriminate among embryos of the basis of very small distinctions, for example, and this could be interpreted as going against the human rights of that developing individual.
