Will the literacy hour be fun or just a straightjacket?
Article Abstract:
The UK government believes that its literacy hour initiative for primary schools will play a key role in achieving its target of ensuring that 80% of 11-year-olds are reading at their chronological age or above by 2002. The literacy hour involves 15 minutes whole-class work on a shared book, 15 minutes whole-class work on spelling and grammar, 20 minutes in ability groups and 10 minutes reviewing the work as a whole class. This initiative will oblige primary school teachers to make significant changes to their approach to teaching reading, and has been denounced by some observers too prescriptive.

Talking it over: how to get the boys to the top of the class
Article Abstract:
The Vale of Ancholme comprehensive school in Brigg, Humberside, runs a programme aimed at helping boys to fulfil their academic potential. Pupils are encouraged to discuss why boys may encounter difficulties at school, and a number of key issues have been identified. This work may serve as a model for other schools. It was found that boys tend to have poorer language skills than girls, and may also suffer academically because they find it hard to discuss their feelings with their friends.
