This mouthwash could mean a lot to your children
Article Abstract:
St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, has devised a test for finding cystic fibrosis carriers by analysing the DNA of cells from a mouthwash. One hundred and fifty mutations of the gene cause the disease, but only one is mainly responsible for British cases. Although it is possible to screen the population using the test, counselling is vital as children of two carriers have a 25% chance of inheriting the disease. Cystic fibrosis clogs the lungs and blocks the pancreas, greatly reducing life expectancy.

Could a pig save your life?
Article Abstract:
Xenotransplantation, or the use of organs taken from an animal to treat a human with a terminal disease, presents many medical and ethical problems. Organ transplants have been shown to be effective, and are cheap compared with alternative treatments. However, there is a serious shortage of human organs, and it seems unlikely that supplies will rise. Using animal organs would overcome this problems, but there are risks involved, including the transmission of viruses or bacteria from animals to humans.

Does this mean the British might have to talk about sex?
Article Abstract:
The weather has always been one of the main topics of conversation in the UK, as it is extremely changeable. This allows people who do not know each other very well to avoid talking about more sensitive issues, which are discussed much more openly in other countries, where the weather changes very little. It has now become accepted that professional weather forecasters will never have very much success in the UK, as the shape of the country makes computer forecasts unreliable.
