Not just an excuse for a dim child
Article Abstract:
Children with dyslexia have trouble with reading, writing, memory and co ordination, and recent research has shown that this could be due to differences in the visual system and in the brain. In humans and primates there is a fast magnocellular visual system for moving objects and low contrast vision, and a slower parvocellular system which carries high contrast vision, colour and detail. Post mortems have found that the latter system is smaller in dyslexics. In Britain, one child in every class on average is dyslexic and faces numerous difficulties including problems with the new national curriculum tests.

A pain that's hard to stomach
Article Abstract:
Chronic pelvic pain is relatively common among women in the UK. However, it can be very hard to diagnose, and this means that many sufferers go untreated for a long time. The most common cause of pelvic pain is endometriosis, where the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus and bleeds each month. Pelvic pain can also be caused by adenomyosis, where the lining of the womb invades the womb itself, by irritable bowel syndrome, by adhesions or by pelvic inflammatory disease. Treatments can include drugs to suppress ovarian activity or, in extreme cases, a hysterectomy.

The thrill is not the kill
Article Abstract:
Almost all serious gamblers are men, and most of the 1% of adults in the UK who have severe gambling problems are men. For women, gambling is mainly a social activity, but compulsive male gamblers tend to have very different attitudes. They are not concerned about the money involved, are disappointed when they win and may even prefer to lose. Compulsive gamblers are driven mainly by the need to gain a sense of completion when the lose all their money.
