Throwing government money around won't cut unemployment
Article Abstract:
It has been widely stated over recent years that most European unemployment is the result of structural difficulties rather than insufficient demand. This view has become even more popular as deregulation of the UK labour market has apparently started to create more jobs. It is therefore assumed that unemployment must be solved through deregulation, increased competition, greater flexibility in the workforce and lower social costs. However, this view is now being challenged by some observers, who point out that increased government spending will not necessarily reduce unemployment.

A comfortable future for the British welfare state
Article Abstract:
The UK's welfare system could certainly be made more efficient, but it does not face the serious funding problems which are being seen in other countries, according to research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Pension payments are relatively high compared with some other industrial countries, and the public sector financing of the current position of the elderly is sustainable. It is likely that the welfare pressure on UK government spending will decline over the next three decades.

Optimists and pessimists alike line up predictions for the year
Article Abstract:
Some economic trends which took place in the UK in 1995 took forecasters by surprise, while others were accurately predicted, according to an assessment by the Independent newspaper of the accuracy of economic forecasts. The most accurate forecasts overall were made by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), an independent research body. It is likely that developments in the economy in 1996 will also take forecasters by surprise.
