Shell wins over village with cash and liquor
Article Abstract:
Local people in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria have been persuaded by Shell, the largest oil company in the world, to accept the presence of oil rigs with gifts of money and drink and promises to help with community projects. However, the presence of the oil industry has not brought any real wealth to local communities, with money paid to village leaders rarely being passed on to ordinary people. The recent executions of Saro-Wiwa and other activists have made it increasingly important for Shell to create a positive image about its presence in Nigeria.

'Hoax' Aids cure makes a fortune for Kenyan coterie
Article Abstract:
Claims by Professor Arthur Obel, a top employee of the Kenyan government who was educated at the University of London, that Pearl Omega, a herbal preparation he developed, can restore the health of Aids patients, are now beginning to be rejected. He has been able to produce no firm evidence to back up his claims, and has been further discredited following the discovery that he is illegally selling the product. It is believed that a considerable amount of the compound is now in circulation.
