To hell ... and halfway back
Article Abstract:
The life of a pianist can be very pressurised, according to David Helfgott. He became famous at a very early age, but then developed mental health problems and faded into obscurity. He is now performing again, but needs to be constantly supervised by his wife. His experiences are the subject of a new film, 'Shine,' in which Australian actor Geoffrey Rush plays the central role. The film has attracted some criticism from Helfgott's family, with his sister claiming that it inaccurately portrays their father as harsh and violent.

Game, set and match
Article Abstract:
A pianist does not only practice at the piano, but also mentally, according to concert pianist Grigory Sokolov. He feels that he practices 24 hours a day, being careful first to internalise the music. For him, music is not fixed in time or space, and believes that music has no development. Concerts are vital to his work, and he feels very uneasy if he does not do concerts very frequently. He makes 'live' recordings which are technically flawless, and does not feel at ease in the recording studio.
