Tongue-tied by technocrats
Article Abstract:
Impersonal social effects of technocracy are not addressed because they are not scientific. The British public is given technical answers to problems concerning safety, ignoring other concerns. The BSE scare about contaminated beef led to discovery about farming methods. The realisation of battery hens' conditions came about through the increase of salmonella poisoning. Another area of concern is the nuclear power industry, where technical discussion promotes safety rather than campaigns against nuclear power.

Finding freedom in the bugs
Article Abstract:
Stephen Jay Gould, the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University, is a specialist in the study of snails and fossils. However, he is also known to the general public as a leading science writer. His writing has prompted extensive debate about issues relating to evolution, and he has been extremely successful in making science accessible to ordinary people. He is not afraid to put forward radical views, and even sees Marx as having contemporary relevance.

This mouse should roar
Article Abstract:
The European Patent Convention permits the granting of patents unless the invention is immoral (EPO Article 53a.) This led to a provisional patent for the Oncomouse, developed at Harvard University to die from cancer. Many researchers think animals' suffering can only be justified if it benefits humanity. Making money out of animals' suffering is a different matter from research. Animal welfare groups objected to EPO's position.
