Tortured for refusing to reveal my sources
Article Abstract:
A Zimbabwean newspaper editor discusses the challenges facing journalists in his country. Legal instruments available for use by the government against journalists and publications it regards as rebellious are detailed, with particular attention being given to the Law and Order Maintenance Act, under which it is a crime to bring the President, the government or the constitution into contempt. The difficulties of reporting in Zimbabwe, which has no special laws to protect the media, are discussed.

Battle of writs against the IRA
Article Abstract:
The IRA has established a policy of exploiting libel legislation to intimidate newspapers that try to name IRA members. Senior IRA managers will issue writs even when there is no hope of winning the case. For most newspapers, there is too much risk involved in allowing a case to go to court, and they prefer to reach an out-of-court settlement. Fighting a case requires a great deal of money and strong commitment on the part of the newspaper's executives.

Whatever happened to serious journalism?
Article Abstract:
