Wanted: good news to save mutuals' eight-year bull run

Article Abstract:

US mutual funds have taken in $1.1 trillion since 1991, and until recently were attracting at least $20 billion in new cash each month. However, they are now beginning to experience difficulties, and there may have been a net outflow of money from equity funds in Aug 1998. Some analysts believe that the situation may deteriorate further, as US stocks are still around 35% overvalued. In contrast, fund managers are attempting to be confident, emphasizing the strength of the domestic economy.

The UN loses a diplomatic bruiser

Article Abstract:

Sir David Hannay, who has for the last five years been British ambassador to the United Nations, has become well known for his aggressive style, often appearing to criticise other countries. He is frequently impatient with people who are less intelligent or well-informed than he is, and his staff have often found him hard to work with. However, he has been highly respected, and has come to dominate the Security Council.
