Training opens door to computer efficiency
Article Abstract:
Many companies are investing heavily in information technology in order to increase their competitiveness, but will not derive maximum benefit from new systems unless they ensure that staff are trained to use them properly. Much of the training undertaken in the past was of poor quality, and this has led to hardware being underused. The training market remains highly fragmented, and often separate training programmes are required for each part of a computer system.

Prepared for life beyond the laboratory
Article Abstract:
The Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) has organised intensive week-long schools for PhDs to explain the marketable skills they have gained during their studies since 1967. Communications and teamworking skills are transferable to industry. Executives from private companies act as tutors. An SERC survey found that 55% altered their career plans after attending a graduate school and 73% sought non-academic research posts.
