Third World challenge to nuclear treaty
Article Abstract:
Many conflicting national interests are making negotiations on the future of the Non-Proliferation Treaty extremely complicated. The NPT, which has been in existence for 25 years, has now been signed by 170 of the 185 members of the United Nations, but is due to be renewed at a conference opening in Apr 1995, with a vote to be taken by mid-May. Some countries now believe that its extension should be conditional on a new test-ban treaty or on guaranteed progress towards disarmament.

Trident could be bargained away to save arms treaty
Article Abstract:
Latest developments in efforts by the US and Russia to gain the support of non-aligned states in their negotiations to renew the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and set up a new arms-control regime could force the UK to put forward its Trident nuclear deterrent as a bargaining tool. Russian president Boris Yeltsin favours a so-called Start 3 disarmament deal which would reduce Russian and US arsenals to levels which would call the arsenals of France and the UK into question.

Big five strive to keep nuclear peace
Article Abstract:
The nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which came into force in 1970 and has been signed by more than 170 countries, is now due to be renewed. It has attracted considerable political controversy, with some countries refusing to sign it and some observers criticising it as ineffective. The UK, Russia, the US and France are now facing a hard task to ensure that it is renewed.
