Troubled Tarmac takes stock

UK building materials company Tarmac has declined to 13th place in the top construction companies in Feb 1992. Its profits which were 393.1 million pounds sterling in 1988 have decreased by 87% and are likely to be wiped out. Debts were 480 million pounds sterling at the end of 1990. Its share price has decreased by 33% from 175 pence to 117 pence. Tarmac failed to act against the recession and continued to invest in building material companies and land during the 90s. Brick demand has decreased by a third and land and property prices by a fifth since 1989.

Tampon maker's European unity

Tambrands restructured its operations in 1991 to cover Europe as one country. Manufacturing, marketing, personnel and information systems are unified at the Woking, Surrey, England headquarters. Packaging types have been reduced from 220 to two, with six or seven languages on the packages. The company aim for the same price in each European country. European advertising agency Euro RSCG has devised a single advertisement with interchangeable texts. Direct marketing and education are the responsibility of local management.
