Tudjman's risky ploy to win Krajina
Article Abstract:
The truce signed in Mar 1994 between Croatia and the Krajina Serbs has held well, and a more recent economic agreement has led to the reopening of the E-70 motorway. The US, the European Union, the UN and Russia are now discussing plans for a political settlement in Croatia, but problems have been caused by the decision by president Franjo Tudjman to expel UN peacekeepers from Croatia when their mandate comes to an end at the end of Mar 1995. He fears that the partition of the country will become permanent if action is not taken soon, and there is now international concern that war could break out again if he issues a challenge to the Serbs.

UN loses face over mission impossible
Article Abstract:
The United Nations hopes to prevent an escalation of the conflict in Croatia by not sanctioning air strikes against the Bosnian Serb forces. It has also failed to take any action to punish the Bosnian Serbs for breaching the international ban on artillery close to the city of Sarajevo. The United Nations has now become almost powerless to deal with developments in former Yugoslavia, and its lack of firm action reflects the fact that the rest of the world would rather avoid dealing with the difficult issues involved.

Tudjman leans towards dictatorship
Article Abstract:
Croatian president Franjo Tudjman has been guilty of a number of violations of democratic principles since Croatia began the struggle for independence in 1991. This creates difficulties as Croatia takes up membership of the Council of Europe. This organisation has taken account of Tudjman's dubious background, and has imposed 21 conditions on Croatian membership. These include finding a democratic solution to the problems resulting from Tudjman's decision to ignore the elected members of Zagreb's local council.
