Turning to Allah in time of need
Article Abstract:
The popularity of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) in Algeria has been a surprise to its opponents, and the elections have been cancelled by the authorities after FIS won the preliminary round. The rise of the FIS can be explained by the high unemployment, impoverishment of the people and the undemocratic nature of the present government. Not all FIS members want armed resistance or fundamentalism, but they are opposed to the imposition of Mohamed Boudiaf by the security forces and cancellation of democratic elections.

Algiers smothered in blanket of security
Article Abstract:
Security has been stepped up in Algeria as fears grow that the Armed Islamic Group could attempt to disrupt the forthcoming presidential election. There is a particularly large presence of security forces in the capital, Algiers. However, it seems unlikely that any terrorist attack will be launched. Many Armed Islamic Group cells have been broken, and ordinary people are no longer afraid to express their opposition to the fundamentalists.

Confusion dominates the 'ballot for peace.' (Algerian elections)
Article Abstract:
Algeria has recently held its first election since the suspension of parliamentary elections by the military-supported regime in 1992. Many people turned up to vote, despite threats from armed Islamist groups. President Liamine Zeroual has proved very popular, and a strong vote for him will be seen as legitimising his presidency.
